Identify pH as -log10 [H+] and explain that a change in pH of 1 means a ten-fold change in [H+]

The pH of a solution is defined as the negative logarithm (to base 10) of the concentration of hydrogen ions:

  • As the scale is to the base of ten, a change in pH of 1 corresponds to a ten-fold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions.
